About Mater's Neonatal Critical Care Unit

As one of Australia’s largest Neonatal Critical Care Units, our expert team of neonatal specialists provides compassionate and holistic care to seriously ill and premature babies, including babies who are born extremely prematurely or require complex medical, cardiac and surgical care.

Comprising of 79 cot spaces across the intensive and special care nurseries,  specialised medical and nursing care is provided within a welcoming environment. Babies are admitted to the area best suited to their clinical needs and are cared for by our multidisciplinary team of clinicians, each dedicated to helping every baby admitted to the unit.

Mater’s NCCU comprises of three sections, and your baby will be admitted to the area best suited to their needs.

We strongly believe that parents and families are a really important part of the team caring for your baby and we encourage parents to participate in their baby’s care. This helps to establish and strengthen bonds between parents and their baby.

We welcome parents and baby’s siblings to visit at any time, and also welcome phone calls from parents who need to check on their baby for that extra peace of mind. Visitors who are not parents are asked to avoid certain times of the day and due to space constraints, there is a limit of two people at each cot side at any one time. Children who are not siblings of the baby will not be able to enter the NCCU due to the risk of infections. There is a waiting room area for visitors in the Level 6 reception foyer.

Our nurseries

How do I access the nursery to see my baby?

Entry to the nursery is accessed via an intercom system located beside the main entry doors next to reception on Level 6 of Mater Mothers’ Hospitals . The intercom alerts the nurses in the room where your baby is being cared for. Please follow the directions for the intercom and wait for your call to be answered.

When talking to staff via the intercom please clearly state the following information:

  • your name e.g. Chris Smith; father or mother of…
  • who you are visiting e.g. baby Smith or Emma Smith
  • your baby's cot number e.g. 612

When you enter the nursery please ensure that other people do not follow you into the nursery. If you or any of your family members or visitors experience symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat or nasal congestion; we request that you postpone your visit until you are well.
