First aid for babies boosts mums’ confidence

First aid for babies boosts mums’ confidence

Bringing a newborn home is exciting; but it can be a little daunting too. Ensuring a safe environment and knowing what to do in cases of injury, illness or an emergency are just some of the concerns of new parents.

Earlier this year Mater Mothers’ Hospitals, in collaboration with Mater Education, launched a first aid course specifically for parents with babies. The course has been such a hit that it is now running weekly.

For Mater Education Course Coordinator Toni-Maree Henaway the class offers an opportunity to educate new parents and provides another avenue to continue Mater's exceptional care into the home. “It’s important to remember that babies and children are not little adults,” Toni-Maree said.

“Their physiology is different, meaning they react differently to injury and illness. We need to keep this in mind when administering any form of first aid treatment.”

Course participant and first-time mum Bonnie Jensen said the course helped to boost her confidence.

“As a new mum there’s a lot to worry about,” she said.

“I especially worry about breathing issues, choking and how to do CPR.”

“It’s reassuring to know what to do, including when to call for help.” she said.

Although the chances of needing to administer first aid may be slim, in the heat of the moment there’s no time to ‘Google it’.

Bonnie said that she was glad her husband attended the course with her so they both had the same information to help in an emergency.

The hands-on course is designed to equip parents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for their baby should they face an emergency. Participants learn to identify, respond to and manage common infant injuries and emergencies including choking, poisoning, burns, bleeding, fractures, allergic reactions and respiratory illnesses. The course also covers resuscitation (CPR) for infants and young children and recognising when to go to hospital or seek emergency assistance.
