Celebrating International Day of the Midwife - Judi Mogg

Today is International Day of the Midwife – a day when Mater recognises the extraordinary work and commitment of our hundreds of midwives.

Judi Mogg has cared for thousands of mums and bubs in her career as a midwife, but she never gets tired of welcoming new lives into the world.

The 61-year-old has worked at Mater Mothers' Private Mackay for the last 15 years and will celebrate International Day of the Midwife today with the hospital’s 16 other midwives.

The day will be extra special for Judi as she is stepping down from her senior role as Nurse Unit Manager of the hospital’s obstetrics, paediatrics and gynaecology surgical ward – although she plans to keep working as a Mater midwife for a few more years.

Midwifery is a challenging but rewarding role according to Judi.

“It’s very special to be involved with families when they are growing and developing,” Judi said.

“And it’s beautiful to see mums and babies bond together and the joy families share.”

Judi, who has three grown-up children of her own, trained as a midwife in South Australia in 1985 and worked in Western Australia before relocating to Mackay with her husband Chris 2007.

She has worked at Mater Mothers ever since and became the Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) of the obstetrics and paediatrics ward five years ago.

With more than 400 babies born each year at the hospital, it’s a busy role but one which has allowed Judi to build close connections with Mackay families.

“You might not be there for each birth, but you always get to know the mothers and babies in the days afterwards, and that’s when you build strong bonds with them,” Judi said.

“And because this is a paediatrics and women’s health ward, I often get to see the families again, when children come in to have their tonsils out or have other procedures.

“It’s wonderful to maintain that long continuity of care and a real connection with families.”
