Triplets plus one enjoy Emporium Hotel South Bank

Parents Sam and Lorren welcomed triplets in 2017—Mater little miracles Aiden, Elaina and Clay. Born at 29 weeks at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane, their triplets weighed just 1.125kg, 1.04kg and 1kg and spent 11 weeks in Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU).

“My routine was the same each day. I would drop off to NCCU any milk I had pumped the night before and go from Aiden to Elaina to Clay’s cot—and back again—feeding, changing and giving cuddles,” Lorren said.

“It was hard leaving the hospital every night knowing I was leaving my babies behind, even though I knew they were in the best care possible.”

76 days later Sam and Lorren’s triplets were discharged all together and they were able to take her babies home.

Two years later, Lorren surprisingly fell pregnant naturally; something she didn’t think was possible.

“We couldn’t believe it. We took a test every day to ensure the line was getting darker,” Lorren said.

This time around, the pregnancy and birth of their daughter Mikayla was very different for both Lorren and Sam and they were able to experience some of those special moments they had missed out on the first time they were at Mater Mothers.

“My pregnancy with Mikayla was a breeze. I went from having a scan every two weeks with the triplets to having four scans in total with Mikayla,” Lorren said.

“Sam was able to cut the umbilical cord; I was able to hold her straight away. It was very healing for us after our experience with having babies needing care in NCCU the first time around.”

“Mikayla weighed 3.109kg—just 100 grams lighter than the triplets combined!” Lorren said.

And this time around, Sam and Lorren’s experience was made that extra bit special thanks to Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane’s newest Caring Continues offering which allows eligible families to spend a luxurious two night stay at the nearby Emporium Hotel South Bank before heading home.

It’s a special bonding opportunity for a growing family to get to know their little one.

“It was the perfect experience for us, as our triplets were able to come and meet Mikayla in a lovely, open space,” Lorren said.

“It was also nice for both Sam and I to have one-on-one time with Mikayla in a very comfortable and non-clinical environment.”

The offering also comes with the reassurance of having 24/7 access to a Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane midwife onsite.

“I wouldn’t have come to the Emporium Hotel if there wasn’t a midwife on hand for back-up. I was having trouble latching and the midwife was there within minutes to help us. It was so reassuring,” Lorren said.

Lorren is thankful she had this special time to get to know Mikayla while also introducing her to her big brothers and sister in a calming environment.

“I think the offering is especially perfect for women and families who have older children. The ability to have your children come and stay means a lot,” Lorren said.

“It’s all really lovely, if we could stay here for a week we would. But we better take the triplets off their grandparents’ hands!”
