World Clubfoot Day

World Clubfoot Day

Today we recognise World Clubfoot Day and Mater Children’s Private Brisbane is proud to run Queensland’s only private Clubfoot Clinic.

From the age of two weeks, Riley Fonua has been visiting Maters’ clinic weekly to receive treatment for Clubfoot.

In Clubfoot, the foot appears twisted and can even look as if it's upside down. Despite its appearance, Clubfoot itself doesn't cause any discomfort or pain.

Using a non-surgical treatment that includes gentle manipulation of the feet followed by the application of plaster casts and temporary bracing, the Ponseti method is nearly 100 percent effective in giving children a productive life.

“Our little warrior Riley was born with a Clubfoot. Riley has been undergoing the Ponseti treatment since he was two weeks old. The treatment is done in two phases; the casting stage, which is five to six weeks; and the bracing phase,” tells Robyn, Riley’s mum.

Following the Ponseti method, Riley has received a new cast each week, over a six week period, which has helped to straighten his foot and given him the ability to live a normal life.

Riley’s dad, Fleming was also treated at Mater 24 years ago for Clubfoot.

“In our case, Riley’s Clubfoot was hereditary, something his daddy had as a baby and was corrected the same way Riley has been.”

Today, at 10 weeks of age, Riley had his last cast removed. Thanks to the treatment he has received at Mater, Riley will have full capacity to walk, run and play like his friends and older siblings.

“After 7 weeks in a cast Riley will have graduated to boots and a bar. Today is such a special day for our family,” Robyn said.

Dr. Ignacio Ponseti changed the way Clubfoot is treated. World Clubfoot Day recognises the thousands of newborns affected each year.
