Top tips for keeping your baby cool in hot weather

Top tips for keeping your baby cool in hot weather

With severe heatwave conditions forecast through Queensland from Sunday, we’ve asked our expert Mater Mothers' midwives for their tips when it comes to keeping your baby safe and comfortable in the heat.

  1. Babies that are exclusively breastfed do not require extra water. In hot weather it is advisable to offer the breast as frequently as your baby demands as your milk will change consistency to ensure that your baby remains well hydrated. Your baby may just be after a short ‘drink’ rather than a full feed.

  2. Feed in the coolest room in the house. You may even like to feed lying down (less body contact).

  3. Your baby should have  six to eight clear soaked wet nappies in 24 hours, if they are getting enough

  4. Dress baby in a singlet and nappy, or other loose clothing.

  5. Lukewarm baths can cool baby down—do not use cold water.

  6. Ensure air can circulate around the place where your baby sleeps e.g. cot or bassinette.

  7. If you have an air-conditioner, set the temperature between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius. If you use a fan do not aim it directly at your baby but rather let it just circulate the air.

  8. Avoid taking baby outside if possible during very hot days; if you are outside stay in the shade and be vigilant about skin protection.

  9. Never leave a baby unattended in a car.

  10. If you are concerned at all about your baby please seek medical assistance.

The forecasts can be viewed on the BOM Heatwave Service site.
