Mum cries with joy to see Samuel's big day

Published in Courier Mail, Kara Vickery

There was a time when Sue and Jason Slade did not think their precious newborn son would live long enough to make it out of Mater Mothers' Hospital.

Five years on, on the eve of Samuel's first day of prep, Mrs Slade is tearing up with joy.

Samuel was born at just 26 weeks gestation, weighing just 1050g.

The Forest lake couple lost their first baby, also born at 26 weeks, after a bleed on the brain and so when Samuel was diagnosed with the same condition they feared the worst.

Mrs Slade said now every milestone is still one to be celebrated.

"We never though that, going through NICU, that we would leave NICU, let alone getting him through kindy and also starting school," she said yesterday.

"We never thought we would get there. So it's a huge, huge thing for us to send him off to school."
