Baby Gianna wins heart of Queensland Firebirds star

Queensland Firebirds star Romelda Aiken-George and former pro-basketballer husband Daniel George are “soaking up little cuddles” with their new bundle of joy, Gianna George.

Baby Gianna was born at Mater Mothers’ Hospital at South Brisbane on 9 August, weighing 3.5 kg.

First-time mother and Jamaican-born Romelda said she was “slightly sleep deprived” but enjoying motherhood.

“Gianna doesn’t like her cot very much at all,” the 1.96 m star goal shooter said.

“But that means I am getting lots of cuddles in.”

Romelda, from Moorooka, said the couple chose the name Gianna, which meant God is gracious.

“We didn’t actually know what we were having, but we loved the name Gianna,” she said.

“It really suits her. She’s so beautiful and is the perfect, tiny little human. I love her scrunchy face when she wakes up in the morning.”

Romelda, 33, described motherhood as a “learning curve” and thanked the nurses and doctors at Mater Mothers who helped her through her first pregnancy.

“I’m learning as I go and trying not to stress every time she cries,” she laughed.

“My husband has been doing everything he can to make sure we are getting some sleep - he feels a bit helpless not being able to help with the feeds at night.”

Romelda’s sister Nicole arrived from Jamaica the day before Gianna was due and is helping support the family with their new arrival for the next few weeks.

The netball star joined the Queensland Firebirds in 2008 and is currently on maternity leave.
