Mater Mothers’ Hospitals celebrates World Breastfeeding Week

Mater Mothers’ Hospitals celebrates World Breastfeeding Week

Mater Mothers’ Hospital is celebrating World Breastfeeding Week (1 to 7 August) with a live web chat to promote the benefits of breastfeeding and Mater’s Breastfeeding Support Centre.

This year’s theme for World Breastfeeding Week, as established by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), is “Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal – for Life!” which asserts the importance of increasing and sustaining the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding.

Research shows that babies who receive only breast milk for the first six months of life are less likely to develop a wide range of chronic and acute diseases, including ear infections, diarrheal diseases, asthma, obesity, and respiratory illnesses. Mothers also benefit from breastfeeding with a decreased risk for breast and ovarian cancers.

As part of the celebrations, Mater’s Mothers’ Group members are invited to join lactation consultants Julie Germaine and Jane Swan for a live web chat at www.matermothers.org.au/chat on Friday, 8 August from 10 am to 11 am.

Julie and Jane will be able to answer breastfeeding-related questions including feeding patterns, milk supply and also any other questions you have about pregnancy or the early days of parenthood.

To take part in the web chat you must be a member of the online Mater’s Mothers’ Group, a free support network where you can share your knowledge, experience and the joys of motherhood, as well find out about exclusive Mater Mothers’ events. You can register to join Mater’s Mothers’ Group here.

Mater’s Breastfeeding Support Centre is available to pregnant and postnatal women in the hospital or as a fee-for-service centre for women who are breastfeeding at home.

The centre is a specialist service run by qualified lactation consultants, who are experienced in caring for newborn, preterm and special needs babies, to support women as they develop their breastfeeding technique.

The centre runs classes for women during pregnancy including breastfeeding preparation and a diabetic clinic to provide breastfeeding and expressing information for pregnant women with diabetes.

Mater’s Breastfeeding Support Centre is open from 7.30 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding

public holidays). Bookings are essential. For further information, phone 07 3163 8200.
