During pregnancy, we are encouraged to participate in exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. Finding the right and comfortable way to exercise is important but often difficult to do. Water exercise (hydrotherapy or aquatherapy), either in a class or on your own can be a comfortable and safe way to remain active during your pregnancy.

Why exercise in water?

  • Uses low impact environment, promoting comfort and wellbeing.

  • Provides support by reducing the effect of gravity on your body.

  • Enables you to continue to be active with pregnancy related back or pelvic pain.

  • Can assist with circulation and swelling management.

  • Disperses heat while exercising.

What’s important to know with water exercise?

  • As with all exercise in pregnancy it is important to be able to talk comfortably while exercising, so as not to overheat.

  • Maintain good hydration before, during and after being in the water.

  • Pool water temperature for exercise is recommended at 32° C or less.

  • Look after your skin after spending time in the water.
