Choosing your private maternity care

Every day is Mother's Day at Mater Mothers’ Private Redland, so we know that pregnancy can be an exciting time for women and their families.

Understanding and managing your maternity care

Your choice of care will be affected by:

  • your wishes
  • any complications from a previous pregnancy
  • any medical conditions that you have
  • conditions that may arise in this pregnancy
  • where you live.

Mater Mothers’ Private Redland midwives will support your individual birthing plan. They are familiar with the expectations of your obstetrician and will communicate regularly with them during your labour and birth.

The midwifery and nursing team will look after you on the postnatal ward after your baby’s birth. If you have any concerns about your care, you can speak to the manager of the relevant ward or clinical department.

Developing a birth plan

Many couples wish to develop and share their plan for labour and birth with their maternity team. While staff at Mater Mothers’ Private Redland would encourage you to consider your preferences for this special time, it is important to discuss these with your obstetrician prior to going into labour so that any details which might incur a risk to you or your baby can be fully discussed before labour begins.

Because labour and birth involve so many variables, it is not possible to predict exactly what will happen, and you should be reassured that the Mater Mothers’ Private Redland team are committed to providing the best care which is safe for both you and your baby. Sometimes, in emergency situations this may mean your preferences may not be able to be followed exactly. Wherever possible we would endeavour to discuss the reasons for this with you to facilitate informed consent and your understanding of events.

Advanced care

The health and safety of you and your baby is very important to us. If you or your baby requires specialised care, Mater Mothers’ Private Redland has a transfer agreement with the Redland Public Hospital, as well as Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane.

If your baby requires a transfer to the Redland Public Hospital Special Care Nursery, mothers usually remain at Mater Mothers’ Private Redland. You and your immediate family will have unrestricted visiting privileges to your baby.

Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane provides tertiary level retrieval services for mothers and babies, and is a recognised leader in maternity care. If your baby requires a transfer you will be transferred to a postnatal ward at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane to be closer to your baby.

Coming to hospital for the birth of your baby

During the final stages of your pregnancy, we highly recommend that you and your support person take time to familiarise yourselves with our hospital and where to go.

If you are concerned about yourself or your baby at any stage, please telephone the hospital on 07 3163 7444 to speak to midwife. The number is available 24 hours a day.
