Miracle baby celebrates first birthday

When Gladstone couple Margeux Wesley and husband Clint fell pregnant with their first baby, they were oblivious to the journey that lay ahead of them.

Everything was going well in Margeux’s pregnancy until she received news at her 19 week scan that her baby was having complications.

Margeux was visiting family in the United States when it was confirmed by a local doctor that her baby had a congenital heart condition and it was possible that he could have a genetic disorder such as Down Syndrome.

“At this point I had already become attached to the baby and I was really scared for my baby’s life because I didn’t know what to expect,” Margeux said.

When Margeux returned to Gladstone, she flew to Mater’s Centre for Maternal Fetal Medicine to care for her high risk pregnancy.

Gavin Wesley was born on 18 March 2014 at 39 weeks gestation weighing 4.1 kg.

The newborn spent 6 days in the Special Care Nursery at Mater Mothers’ Hospital to monitor his heart condition.

Margeux said she was worried about Gavin because she didn’t know what to expect of his congenital heart disease and Down Syndrome diagnosis.

“At first we were afraid but after plenty of information and education from the clinical staff at Mater Mothers, we felt like we were in the best possible care,” Margeux said.

“The midwives at Mater Mothers gave me something very special—peace of mind.”

At three months of age, Gavin needed Atrioventricular Septal Defect Surgery at Mater in Brisbane.

On 18 March 2015, Gavin and his family celebrated his first birthday with plenty of cake and cheerful times.

Margeux said Gavin is doing really well and is a happy little boy who loves people and is always smiling.
